Why did Jesus say this?<br \/>\nBecause He didn&#8217;t want us to rashly make oaths or swear by anything.<br \/>\nHaving to swear or make oaths betrays the weakness of our word and can cause us to fall into judgments.<br \/>\nWe are not to swear by heaven or earth or by God&#8217;s name, therefore, we should speak simply with just a &#8220;Yes&#8221; or &#8220;No&#8221;. If we need to emphasize our answer we can say: &#8220;Yes, Yes!&#8221; or &#8220;No, No!&#8221;.<br \/>\nThat way we will keep ourselves from temptation by the evil one of perhaps using God&#8217;s name in vain or by making an oath we would rather not make.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>HEART HELP:<br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong>Jesus said:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cBut I say to you,do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God&#8217;s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your &#8216;Yes&#8217; be &#8216;Yes, \u2018and your &#8216;No,&#8217; &#8216;No.&#8217; For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. Matthew 5:34-37\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath.
